Did you know ?

Of origin the Portuguese water dog was used as aid on the fisherman boats, his tasks was very varied,  picking up the nets and transport messages from one boat to an other, but also guarding these boats.

Nowadays the Portuguese water dogs are kept as a pleasant and friendly family dog.

The dog kept his special haircut which is like a life jacket and for protection of the vital parts, heart and lungs, keeping the backhand as mobile as possible.

The Portuguese water dog is an intelligent, social dog with a strong will.

After careful education you have a lively and social dog, but they are not the type of dogs that can be left alone for a long period of time or spending  his time in a kennel.

The Portuguese water dog is at his best ‘working’ obedience, agility and other dog sports,  they are always in for a nice game!

The Portuguese  comes  whit two varieties of fur, the curly one, which have firm rolling curls up to covering the complete body and the wavy one, which is gently golfed and gleaming.

The colors are black and brown, possibly with white delineation. They are usually groomed in two different models, the Lion-clip, where the nose and the back body are shaved, what remains, is  a plume on the tail, the second manner is  the retriever clip, where the complete body is cut by hand to one length.

The combination for breeding is wavy vs wavy, and wavy vs curly, but never curly vs curly!

Like in each dog race some hereditary deviate can be present in the race of the Portuguese water dog.

Fortunately there are some (DNA) tests developed which allows us to breed selectively limiting the dangers up to a minimum.

We maintain a highly standard concerning the health of our dogs, they are tested

on HD., GM1, PRA and Cardio.

Our goal is preventing instead of healing, also to preserve the qualities of this beautiful race.

Welcome

HD: Hip Dysplasia is a condition which is known in many breeds. It’s not always genetic. Also very important is how the dog is raised, meaning nutrition, exercise a.o.We only breed with the right combinations.

GM1: Storage disease (GM1 gangliosidosis) is a recessive, genetic disorder. It is produced only when two carriers are bred together. The disorder is caused by a lack of an enzyme that allows build up of toxic substances in the nerve cells. It is fatal to affected puppies.

There is a DNA test available, which off course we use.

PRA; Progressive Retinal Atrophy. a group of inherited diseases that cause irreversible degeneration if the retina and eventually causes blindness. PRCD (Progressive Rodcone Degeneration) is the only form of PRA known by pwd’s at this time.

Also for PRA there is a DNA test, which we use. Because of this test you can find out if the dog is PRA-free (A) or Carrier (B).

Cataracts; An opacity of the lens and or its capsule, which may affect one or both eyes and may involve the lens partially or completely. In case where cataracts are complete and  both eyes affected, blindness results.

This disease is tested by a C.E.R.F.-examination. We repeat the Cerf about every two years.

Cardiomyopathy; JDCM (Juvenile Dilated Cardiomyopathy) is a recessively inherited disease which causes sudden death in puppies between the age of 5 weeks and 7 months. There is no cure.

There’s also a DNA test available.

In case you want to read more about these diseases, we recommend the American PWD association www.pwdca.org

We do our best to breed healthy dogs with good characters and at the same time preserve the qualities of the race.

Our pups are growing up in our living room so they get used to children, other animals and every aspect the dog me encounter in further live, a stable base for our pups!
